About WEE

Global Alliance for Mass Entrepreneurship (GAME) has launched the groundbreaking Women Economic Empowerment (WEE) Program. This initiative is meticulously crafted to empower women aged 18 and above from low-income backgrounds in both urban and rural areas. By linking them with different platform archetypes such as rural e-commerce, social commerce, gig work and job tech, WEE aims to enable economic opportunities in the digital platform economy.

WEE’s objective is to positively impact 2.5 lakh women, and is dedicated to unlocking their potential for active participation in the platform economy. The program will formulate a playbook grounded in real-world experiences to dismantle systemic barriers and empower women in these sectors. This initiative underscores the pivotal role of actionable strategies in effecting meaningful change and aligns seamlessly with GAME’s overarching mission of nurturing mass entrepreneurship.

Program focus areas

Building scalable solutions for women in the digital economy

Despite the rapid growth of the platform economy, offering access to new opportunities across geography and scale, women’s participation continues to remain low or limited to certain sectors. WEE Program is collaborating with its partners to bridge the digital gender gap and design gender-intentional working models across four digital platform archetypes, prioritising scalability, and societal impact.

Rural e-commerce

E-commerce has today enabled retailers and MSMEs in rural areas to sell their products online across platforms such as Amazon, thereby giving them a wider customer base for their small businesses to thrive and grow.

While the opportunity is huge, there are barriers to the participation of women due to a lack of gender intentional approach, which includes factors such as limited access to digital skills & platforms and mobility concerns.

Social commerce

A subset of e-commerce, social commerce utilises online communities where merchant and seller products are directly accessible via social media platforms such as Meesho, BizUp, and Facebook, among others.

While social commerce platforms offer easy entry, women still face entry barriers due to a lack of gender intentionality, thereby restricting them from becoming successful sellers/buyers across platforms.

Gig work

The gig economy is simply a free market system where professionals with vocational skill sets can engage in and earn income through temporary jobs and gigs for particular roles and projects, across sectors.

Despite the opportunity it offers, the digital gender gap limits access to training, leaving women underrepresented in the gig economy.

Job tech

Job tech encompasses skill-based work that is facilitated by online labour platforms, especially for the blue & grey collared workforce. Via these platforms, users can create professional profiles and apply for jobs that align with their skills & career goals.

Unfortunately, women’s participation on these platforms is often limited due to absent gendered intentionality which leads to mobility barriers and lack of safety measures, among other issues.

Program partners

Together with our partners, we are unlocking the boundless potential for women in the digital platform economy through a collaborative approach and gender-intentional efforts. We are here to #ignitechange that transcends borders and uplifts communities.

WEE Team

Meet the women of WEE

“WEE is an interesting program which allows intersection of three factors to enable change- private sector with their gender intentional policy, community organisations with their women outreach and women with their intent to see growth and participation. We are excited at GAME, to be putting together this program to bring about real on-ground impact.”
